About the Author
Gary Pratt is a licensed Professional Engineer and president of ControlSphere Engineering. He began his career in 1982 designing instrumentation and control systems for Chevron Corporate Engineering in San Francisco. Gary ventured into PCB/FPGA design for medical imaging systems and marketing for integrated circuit design tools before returning to his roots in instrumentation and controls on the first PLC system to control a GE gas turbine engine. Unfortunately, the book is too big to qualify for international distribution, but in February, a two-volume version of the book will become available for international distribution. Your favorite online retailer in your country should be able to get you those books. Volume 1 retails for $195 and Volume 2 for $185.

I am 61 years old and working on controls in-and-out for some 20 years. I tried to self-learn ST on IEC61131-3 a year ago with CODESYS version 2.3 on my Win2000 laptop, and a lot of Googling, but the learning curve is not picking up. This is why I bought The (ultimate) Book of CODESYS. I am reading Chapter One and it is just fascinating.

The first thing in my mind -- is it possible to port CODESYS IDE to Linux.

I'm pleased you are finding value in the book.
There are runtimes available for Linux on X86 and ARM. The IDE only runs on Windows. I believe CODESYS has a long-term plan for some sort of web-based IDE, but I don't believe that will be out anytime soon. For now its Windows or a Windows VM on Linux.

My first goal is to learn how to map I/O as array.
Array on Chapter Three is of great feature, but I yet found it out in the Book.
I use to command pumps from Lead to lags like:

Thank you for your input.

I am not aware of any way to map I/O data as an array, if the I/O vendor has not set up their Device Description file to accommodate arrays. The data type of your destination variable must match exactly the data type that is specified on the I/O mapping tab. You could map the data to a Union, and then map that to an array (similar to the remapping mentioned in the Union section of the UDT/DUT chapter). But, that is a two-step process. I am working on a way to completely bypass the I/O tree (parameterized section of the device tree), and provide the programmer with complete control on how they want to map the I/O (as well as to allow I/O changes in an online-change, and to allow I/O to be more object-oriented). Please subscribe to ooip-foundation.org to be notified when that library becomes available.

As I mention in the Preface section, I do admit to struggling with the tradeoff between consolidating information and readability. I personally find it easier to understand a single overly-detailed graphic versus spreading the information over several graphics and then swapping back and forth between the graphics in order to understand the big picture. But, I also admit this can make the graphic difficult to read at times. This is why the book is printed with the highest quality possible (at significantly higher cost than standard quality). I’m pleased the magnifying glass approach is working for you.

While formatting Structured Text can help the readability of a complex Boolean equitation somewhat, I’m confident a contest between experienced ST users and experience LD or CFC users would clearly show the graphical languages to be easier and faster to understand. But that is the beauty of IEC61131-3. You are free to choose whatever language(s) you prefer. I urge my students to use the best language for its purpose, but IEC61131-3 does not force this. You are free to follow the methodology you find best.
